White Stork

The White Stork lives in open farmland and builds its nests, which it uses year after year, on exposed trees, buildings or other man-made structures. It forages in arable fields and extensively used meadows and pastures, as well as wetlands, where it preys on small mammals, amphibians and earthworms.

In 1950, following a sharp decline, the species disappeared as a breeding bird in Switzerland. Thanks to reintroduction projects, the number of breeding pairs rose again to 269 by 2010. The development of the population is well documented thanks to the monitoring of broods and ringing of nestlings, and in 2024 there were more than 1,000 pairs.

The White Stork's recovery can be supported through specific conservation measures such as constructing nesting platforms or creating wet meadows.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • It is found mainly in the Central Plateau and the eastern Jura up to 600 m asl, but distribution is sparse in western Switzerland.
  • There are larger colonies of more than 40 breeding pairs in Altreu SO, Avenchens VD, Basel-City, Möhlin AG, Murimoos AG, Uznach SG and Sennwald SG.
Development in Switzerland
  • Decline began by 1900 at latest (140 breeding pairs), disappeared from Switzerland in 1950.
  • Reintroduction project began in 1948 (Max Bloesch), with successes after 1960, and population increased to approximately 18 breeding pairs in 1970 and 269 pairs in 2010.
  • Sharp increase after 2017 to over 1,000 breeding pairs by 2024.

  • Distribution is concentrated in eastern Europe and Spain.
  • Population trend in Western Europe similar to that in Switzerland, with sharp declines until 1950 and reintroductions, now increasing.

The White Stork makes use of open agricultural landscapes with wet meadows and arable fields, as well as wetlands, including areas close to human habitation. It tends to choose nesting sites close to its foraging habitats.

Feeding habitat

  • Freshly ploughed fields, mown meadows, pastures and wetlands.

Nesting site

  • Perennial nest on exposed buildings, trees or man-made structures (electricity masts, poles).
  • Will also use artificial platforms.

Winter habitat

  • Increasingly stays in Switzerland for the winter.
  • In wintering areas in southern Europe, often forages on open rubbish dumps or in rice paddies.
  • In Africa, in savannah areas.

The ‘responsibility’ factor describes the international significance of the Swiss population of a species. The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

Collisions with overhead lines and electrocution pose the greatest risk for the White Stork. At the local level, there is a shortage of good foraging habitats close to nesting sites.

 
Breeding season
  • In traditional colonies, competition for suitable nesting sites is sometimes very fierce.
  • Cool wet weather during the nestling period reduces breeding success.
  • Waste brought into the nest or fed poses a risk to both nestlings and adult birds.
