Northern Lapwing

The Northern Lapwing originally inhabited reedland, especially mown moor-grass meadows. When these habitats disappeared, it moved mainly to arable land, but also to grassland.

The loss of wetlands and the intensification of agricultural land use led to a sharp decline of the Northern Lapwing in the 20th century. In 2004, there were only 80 breeding pairs left in Switzerland. The population has now recovered to around 200 breeding pairs, thanks entirely to targeted protection and conservation measures.

This rare ground-nesting bird is still considered to be endangered (EN) and is reliant on targeted measures such as the establishment of suitable nesting areas left undisturbed during the breeding season (e.g. lapwing fallow plots, wet arable land) or protective fences around nesting areas to protect clutches and chicks from predators (especially foxes).

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Breeds in the Central Plateau below 600 m asl, in parts of the large Alpine valleys (Rhine Valley, Rhone Valley) and very occasionally in Ticino.
  • Current population approx. 200 breeding pairs.
  • Largest colonies: Wauwilermoos (LU), Nuoler Ried and Frauenwinkel (SZ), Grosses Moos (BE/FR).
Development in Switzerland
  • Sharp decline from approx. 1,000 pairs (mid-1970s) to 80 breeding pairs (2004).
  • Recovery of the population to around 200 breeding pairs (2024) thanks to conservation measures.
International
  • Widespread breeding bird in Eurasia, occurs in Europe from Spain to northern Scandinavia.
  • Significant population declines of 80–90% in central Europe (e.g. -88% from 1992 to 2019 in Germany).

The Northern Lapwing is found in wetlands and on meadows, pastures and arable fields with areas of wet soil and sparse or short vegetation. The Northern Lapwing finds sufficient food in damp topsoil.

Feeding habitat

  • Wet grassland and arable land, reed meadows, sometimes on the margins of ponds and pools.

Nesting site

  • Ground nest in low, patchy vegetation or on vegetation-free arable fields, stubble fallow and fallow areas.
  • On islands in wetlands or wet arable land.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

Population in Switzerland

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

Without protection and conservation measures, too few young birds survive for populations here to remain stable. What is needed are large areas of natural habitat, areas taken out of intensive agricultural use, and protection from predation.

  • Creation of breeding habitats (wet meadows and arable fields, lapwing fallow plots, flood channels) and targeted maintenance (grazing, soil tillage prior to egg laying, impoundment, irrigation).

  • Determine factors influencing individual breeding success (colony size, density, weather, protective measures, breeding habitat, etc.).

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • Heavy dependence on protection and conservation measures in order to achieve the reproduction rate needed to maintain populations.
  • Climatic changes (lack of precipitation) are a challenge: providing wet areas (impoundment, irrigation) is important.
  • Creating more suitable habitats is of crucial importance. The Swiss population is currently heavily dependent on the fate of a small number of colonies.

The Northern Lapwing relies on the availability of wet meadows and arable land. Northern Lapwings use these areas as breeding grounds and for rearing their young, which find sufficient food in the damp topsoil.

Set up protected areas for breeding

When meadows and arable land are cultivated, clutches and chicks are unintentionally destroyed. In order to enable breeding success, clutches are located and left undisturbed. Protecting the nesting sites with electric fences deters ground predators.
