Middle Spotted Woodpecker

The Middle Spotted Woodpecker prefers forests with large numbers of old, rough-barked deciduous trees, in particular oak-rich forests and alluvial forests. It also inhabits minimally-managed or unmanaged forests with no mature oaks but with large numbers of other old and rough-barked deciduous trees as well as a lot of standing deadwood, such as alder swamp forests and beech forests. In Switzerland, the species occurs between 300 and 700 m asl in northern Switzerland (Thurgau to Jura cantons), along the southern foot of the Jura as far as Geneva canton and, more recently, in Valais as far as St. Maurice and in central Switzerland as far as Lucerne. Following a decline in its range from the 1950s, the species has been spreading again since 1993–1996.

Structurally diverse oak forests with a high proportion of old trees and deadwood are key to the preservation and conservation of the Middle Spotted Woodpecker.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Occurs from northern Switzerland (Thurgau to Jura cantons), along the southern foot of the Jura as far as Geneva canton and recently also in Valais as far as St. Maurice and in central Switzerland as far as Lucerne.
  • Distribution is concentrated between 300 and 700 m asl.
  • Population 1,700–2,100 pairs (2013–2016).

  • Increase in population density in long-colonised core areas.

  • Occurs from northern Spain to Denmark, western Russia, Ukraine and the Balkans, and in central Italy as well as parts of Asia Minor, the Caucasus and the Zagros Mountains in Iran.
  • Numbers increasing in many places, declining slightly in northern Spain, central Italy and along the eastern limit of its range.

The Middle Spotted Woodpecker inhabits old, broad-leaved forests rich in deadwood and containing rough-barked trees, such as old oak and hornbeam forests, also forests with little oak but with a lot of deadwood, old beech trees (>300 years old) or rough-barked trees (e.g. alder).

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

Semi-natural, species-rich mixed broad-leaved forests, with oaks, rough-barked mature trees, standing deadwood, of at least 10 ha (one pair) or 100 ha (ten pairs) are a limiting factor. Threat due to excessive felling of mature oak trees and too few oaks being planted.
