Grey-headed Woodpecker

The Grey-headed Woodpecker inhabits extensive, structurally diverse alluvial, oak and beech forests. Its territories often contain stands of mature beech and deadwood, as well as open areas such as are found in early successional stages or extensively used farmland. Ants of the Formicidae family in their various stages are its preferred food year-round.

The Grey-headed Woodpecker has suffered drastic population losses over the past few decades, particularly in western Europe and thus also in Switzerland. Conversely, it has colonised new areas in the north-east of its range. Many aspects of the species' ecology, and thus also factors that may be important for these changes, are still unknown. This lack of knowledge makes it difficult to implement specific conservation measures.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Distribution is concentrated in northern Switzerland.
  • There are also somewhat smaller populations in the Rhine and Münster valleys and the Engadine.
  • A good 80% of the population is concentrated at elevations between 300 and 800 m asl.
  • Population approx. 300–700 pairs.
Development in Switzerland
  • Sharp and sustained decline in population since the mid-1990s.
  • Some new recorded sightings in the east contrast with significant losses in the west and the Central Plateau.
  • Has become rarer between 400 and 600 m asl, with slight increases above 1000 m.
International
  • Occurs from central Europe across northern and eastern Europe and Russia to south-east Asia.
  • European long-term trend is slightly downward, though rising again since the early 2010s.
  • Declining populations in e.g. France, Belgium and Germany, stable or increasing in Italy and some eastern and northern European countries.

The Grey-headed Woodpecker’s habitat often contains stands of mature beech and deadwood, as well as open areas such as are found in early successional stages or extensively used farmland. The species also inhabits alluvial and oak forests, as well as orchard meadows.

Feeding habitat

  • Relatively open ground (forest floor) with access to plenty of ants.
  • Surface of trunks and branches of living and dead trees.

Nesting site

  • Cavities in rotten or dead parts of trees, often in beeches, occasionally in oaks or, where these are not present, in aspens.

Winter habitat

  • Predominantly a resident bird.
  • I Reliant on standing deadwood and tree species with rough, fissured bark when there is snow on the ground.

Its territories often contain stands of mature beech and deadwood, as well as open areas such as are found in early successional stages or extensively used farmland. Ants of the Formicidae family in their various stages are its preferred food year-round.

The Grey-headed Woodpecker has suffered drastic population losses over the past few decades, particularly in western Europe and thus also in Switzerland. Conversely, it has colonised new areas in the north-east of its range. Many aspects of the species' ecology, and thus also factors that may be important for these changes, are still unknown. This lack of knowledge makes it difficult to implement specific conservation measures.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

Population in Switzerland

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats
  • The Grey-headed Woodpecker needs deadwood-rich, fairly open mixed and broad-leaved forests with large areas of mature trees, particularly beeches. It is also reliant on sparsely vegetated ground in forests and meadows with an adequate supply of food, especially ants.
