White-backed Woodpecker

The White-backed Woodpecker lives in large contiguous broad-leaved and mixed forests with a very high proportion of old trees and dead wood. It inhabits forests that are no longer managed, forest reserves, and extensively managed protected and commercial forests with a high volume of deadwood (over 50 m³/ha in parts of the territories). The species returned to Switzerland in the 1990s and now occurs in eastern Switzerland in beech and beech/fir forests between 500 and 1400 m asl. Natural forest reserves and unmanaged or extensively managed forests with a high proportion of old trees and deadwood are crucial for the preservation and conservation of the White-backed Woodpecker.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Returned to Switzerland in the 1990s, first recorded breeding in 1999.
  • Population in the Breeding Bird Atlas (2013–2016): 20–30 breeding pairs, 2025: 50–70 pairs.
  • Distribution is concentrated between 500 and 1400 m asl in northern Grisons, Glarus and St. Gallen Rhine Valley.
Development in Switzerland
  • Insufficient data available for calculating a breeding bird index.
  • Slightly increasing, slow spread northwards and westwards from its current range.
International
  • Occurs from north-east Spain to the Pacific.
  • Switzerland forms the western distribution limit of the subspecies D. l. leucotos.
  • Range expanding in southern Germany and Austria.
  • Trend probably stable in many countries, but sharp decline in parts of northern and eastern Europe.

This woodpecker species needs landscapes with large areas of contiguous broad-leaved and mixed forest containing stands of mature trees. In its 20–120 ha territories, averaging 21 ha during the breeding season, it requires areas with over 50 m³/ha deadwood.

Feeding habitat

  • Contiguous broad-leaved and mixed forests rich in old trees and deadwood.
  • Lying, standing and crown deadwood is drilled out and searched through for beetle larvae.

Nesting site

  • Cavity in rotten or dead parts of trees.
  • Often in beech trees, occasionally other deciduous trees, rarely conifers.

Winter habitat

  • As feeding habitat.
  • In winter, it occasionally also searches for beetle larvae (bark beetles) in coniferous forests.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Large, contiguous broad-leaved and mixed forests rich in old trees and deadwood, with deadwood volumes of more than 50 m³/ha in parts of the territories (20–120 ha), are a limiting factor. Risk due to shorter rotation lengths and the removal of cavity trees / habitat trees.
