Wood Warbler

The ground-nesting Wood Warbler primarily inhabits closed-canopy broad-leaved and mixed forests without a dense shrub layer and with patchy ground vegetation.
It breeds at altitudes up to 1800 m, but densities are low and decreasing. In several areas, particularly in the Central Plateau, it has completely disappeared. The population in Switzerland has fallen to an estimated 3,500–5,000 breeding pairs. There is a similar downward trend right across Europe. The most important factors in the loss of breeding habitat are changing forestry practices, excessive nitrogen inputs and extreme events. Predation, disturbance and winter habitat changes do not yet seem to be having much of a limiting effect. The most important measure is age-class forestry with long rotation times.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Occurs primarily in the Central Plateau, Jura, Valais and Ticino.
  • In the Alps, found mainly on the slopes of the main and side valleys.
  • Densities are low and decreasing almost everywhere.
  • Disappearing completely from more and more areas, especially in the Central Plateau.
Development in Switzerland
  • Between 2016 and 2024, population declined across almost the entire Swiss range, from 5,000–7,500 to 3,500–5,000 breeding pairs.
  • Overall marked decline in numbers from the late 1980s to the present day.
International
  • Occurs throughout Europe (except the Iberian Peninsula).
  • Loss of areas along the edges of its range from the Mediterranean to Scandinavia.
  • Numbers have been declining since the mid-1990s (e.g. Sweden, United Kingdom).
  • Population estimate (2018): 8,500,000–15,000,000 breeding pairs.

The Wood Warbler breeds in broad-leaved and mixed forests, and less commonly in pine and larch forests, with a closed canopy, open subcanopy and sparse ground cover, but with no dense young growth and shrub layer.

Feeding habitat

  • Forages up to the very top of the canopy, but not on the ground.

Nesting site

  • On sloping ground (microrelief in lowlands or hillsides) with individual approach perches.
  • Nest under, in or amongst herbaceous vegetation, cornflower/grass/sedge flowers, deadwood or dwarf shrubs.

Winter habitat

  • Open tropical and subtropical forests in Africa.
  • Peripheral areas of old-growth forest clearings and wooded habitats such as pastures, agricultural crops and savannahs.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Threats, activities and forecasts
Limiting factors and threats

The main reason for the decline of the species is the loss of breeding habitat due to changes in silvicultural practices, excessive nitrogen inputs and extreme events. The impact of predation by wild or domestic animals, human disturbance and changes in winter habitats is so far deemed to be negligible.

 
Breeding season
  • Increase in continuous-cover forest or other structurally divers forest types, shorter rotation times and non-native tree species (especially in the Central Plateau) are reducing the quality of the breeding habitat.
  • Predation by wild/domestic animals and human disturbance play a minor role.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • No specific hazards are known, other than general hazards facing migratory birds during migration and at resting places.
  • Habitat in wintering area so far appears to be a limiting factor only on a small scale.
  • Old-growth forest clearings for crops under an open canopy may until now even have had a beneficial effect.

Monitoring
  • The Wood Warbler is an easy-to-map species, and general information on it can easily be obtained via the Swiss Ornithological Institute’s monitoring of common breeding birds (MHB).
  • Targeted mapping is recommended in order to identify populated forest stands and to pass this knowledge on to cantonal and forest managers.
 
Conservation
  • The silvicultural system of age-class forestry must continue to be practised in areas where site conditions are suitable.
  • Non-use (process protection) of populated stands or of suitable forest communities.
  • Improvement (removal of shrub layer) of suitable forest stands as lighthouse projects.
 
Research
  • There is a lack of data on annual survival rates, mortality during migration and mortality in the wintering area (currently not really technically feasible).
  • Monitoring of land use trends in overwintering areas.
  • Determination of the most likely cause-effect chain regarding Wood Warblers and tree seed mast.

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • Increase in continuous-cover forestry, shorter rotation times, climate change and high nitrogen inputs is leading to a decline in single-layered high forests and thus in the Wood Warbler.
  • Understanding of this forest type in forestry circles is improving and climate-change-induced changes in forest communities could open up new forest stands.
  • Possible habitat loss due to land-use changes in wintering grounds could have an adverse impact.
