Wood Warbler
It breeds at altitudes up to 1800 m, but densities are low and decreasing. In several areas, particularly in the Central Plateau, it has completely disappeared. The population in Switzerland has fallen to an estimated 3,500–5,000 breeding pairs. There is a similar downward trend right across Europe. The most important factors in the loss of breeding habitat are changing forestry practices, excessive nitrogen inputs and extreme events. Predation, disturbance and winter habitat changes do not yet seem to be having much of a limiting effect. The most important measure is age-class forestry with long rotation times.

The main reason for the decline of the species is the loss of breeding habitat due to changes in silvicultural practices, excessive nitrogen inputs and extreme events. The impact of predation by wild or domestic animals, human disturbance and changes in winter habitats is so far deemed to be negligible.
- Increase in continuous-cover forest or other structurally divers forest types, shorter rotation times and non-native tree species (especially in the Central Plateau) are reducing the quality of the breeding habitat.
- Predation by wild/domestic animals and human disturbance play a minor role.
- No specific hazards are known, other than general hazards facing migratory birds during migration and at resting places.
- Habitat in wintering area so far appears to be a limiting factor only on a small scale.
- Old-growth forest clearings for crops under an open canopy may until now even have had a beneficial effect.
- The Wood Warbler is an easy-to-map species, and general information on it can easily be obtained via the Swiss Ornithological Institute’s monitoring of common breeding birds (MHB).
- Targeted mapping is recommended in order to identify populated forest stands and to pass this knowledge on to cantonal and forest managers.
- The silvicultural system of age-class forestry must continue to be practised in areas where site conditions are suitable.
- Non-use (process protection) of populated stands or of suitable forest communities.
- Improvement (removal of shrub layer) of suitable forest stands as lighthouse projects.
- There is a lack of data on annual survival rates, mortality during migration and mortality in the wintering area (currently not really technically feasible).
- Monitoring of land use trends in overwintering areas.
- Determination of the most likely cause-effect chain regarding Wood Warblers and tree seed mast.
- Increase in continuous-cover forestry, shorter rotation times, climate change and high nitrogen inputs is leading to a decline in single-layered high forests and thus in the Wood Warbler.
- Understanding of this forest type in forestry circles is improving and climate-change-induced changes in forest communities could open up new forest stands.
- Possible habitat loss due to land-use changes in wintering grounds could have an adverse impact.
Special or natural forest reserves (especially for closed mixed broad-leaved forests) enable targeted measures for the conservation of the Wood Warbler to be taken.
Improvements (removal of shrub layer) in suitable forest stands as lighthouse projects. Carry out forest management interventions in such a way as to create an open subcanopy.
