Western Jackdaw

The Western Jackdaw prefers open areas such as short-grass meadows and pastures or arable land for foraging. It nests in colonies in cavities in buildings, in tree hollows in parks and on forest edges, and on rock faces.

In Switzerland, the Western Jackdaw is mainly found in the Central Plateau, in the Jura and in Alpine valleys with favourable climates. Between the 1970s and 1990s, its distribution thinned out and the population fell to around 1,000 pairs. There are currently between 1,250 and 1,500 pairs (Breeding Bird Atlas 2013–2016).

Western Jackdaws are strongly attached to traditional breeding sites, and it is very important to protect these. The species can be supported locally by providing nesting aids close to suitable foraging areas.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Widespread in the Central Plateau and the Jura, also in Alpine valleys in Riom GR and Brig VS, in Ticino.
  • Breeding sites usually below 600 m asl, occasionally up to 1000 m asl or higher.
  • Colonies with more than 40 pairs: Hallwyl Castle AG, Landshut Castle BE, Riom Castle GR, Musegg Wall LU, St. Urban’s Abbey LU.
Development in Switzerland
  • Between 1972–1976 and 1993–1996, distribution thinned and population declined to around 1,000 pairs.
  • After 2010, the population increased to 1,250-1,500 breeding pairs.
International
  • Distribution in Eurasia as far as Siberia, Mongolia and Afghanistan, in Africa in Morocco and western Algeria.
  • European population stable overall in recent decades.
  • Slight upward trend in Scandinavia.
  • Significant declines in some parts of central Europe.

The Western Jackdaw prefers to forage on open or short-grass farmland areas. Nesting sites are found in built-up areas, industrial areas and parks, on forest edges and in rocky areas.

Feeding habitat

  • Short-grass meadows and pastures, arable land with patchy vegetation, composting facilities and school and sports grounds.
  • Will use municipal waste if there are no good foraging areas near the nesting sites.

Nesting site

  • Cavities in tall buildings and other structures (e.g. bridges, industrial plants, mobile phone masts, etc.) as well as in sandstone and limestone cliffs.
  • Hollows in trees on forest edges and in parks.
  • Will nest in nest boxes.

Winter habitat

  • Most stay in Switzerland over winter.
  • Socialize with Rooks and Carrion Crows in feeding areas (meadows, pastures, arable land) and at roosts (e.g. trees or tall structures).

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

The main factors endangering the Western Jackdaw are loss of nesting sites due to the removal of hollow trees, building renovations and inadequate quality and quantity of nestling food during the breeding season.

  • Loss of nesting sites due to building renovations or deliberate blocking of access, as well as logging in commercial forests.
  • Insufficient availability/accessibility of invertebrates as nestling food (intensification of agriculture, expansion of built-up areas).
 
Migration/ Winter
  • No significant limiting factors in winter known.
  • Colonies are abandoned after the breeding season, then from late summer Western Jackdaws can again be seen in colonies.
  • Young birds may also overwinter in south-western Europe, while Western Jackdaws from north-eastern Europe also spend the winter here.

Population is monitored through annual monitoring of around 100 selected colonies.

 
Conservation
  • Preserve nesting sites during construction projects and expand where appropriate and possible.
  • Protect hollow trees in mature tree stands and possibly add nesting aids.

  • Conservation of extensively managed, structurally diverse agricultural landscapes, especially in areas close to breeding sites.

  • Compare foraging areas (vegetation density, height, etc.) of flourishing colonies and those with declining populations.
  • Are colonies in urban areas exposed to an ecological trap? In addition to breeding success, investigate other demographic parameters (e.g. survival of adult birds, inward/outward migration).

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • Food shortages and thus low reproductive success of colonies in settlements will be exacerbated by further infill and expansion of built-up areas.
  • The loss of hollow trees in commercial forests means that without conservation measures tree colonies are likely to die out.
  • National population trend rising thanks to targeted conservation measures by local associations, nature conservation authorities and building owners.
