European Turtle Dove

The European Turtle Dove inhabits open woodlands, field copses and floodplain areas within easy reach of arable and meadow areas below 700 m asl. It still breeds in scattered locations in Switzerland; the last populations are concentrated in a few low-lying regions, primarily in western Switzerland, the Rhone Valley, southern Ticino and northern Switzerland. Its population is small and declining, and the species is endangered. Illegal hunting during migration is adversely affecting populations in Europe. However, the main reason for the decline is the loss of suitable habitats, in particular the lack of food close to existing and potential breeding sites. Urgent conservation and protection measures are needed to achieve targeted improvements in food availability in suitable breeding habitats.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Inhabits low-lying areas of Switzerland below 700 m asl.
  • Now occurs in only a few regions, such as Geneva, Vaud, Grosses Moos and the Magadino plain.
  • Current population probably significantly below the 2013–2016 estimate (150–400 pairs).
Development in Switzerland
  • Population has declined by around 90 % since 1980.
  • In a number of areas, the species has now disappeared or there are only a few singing birds left.
International
  • Occurs in temperate zones of Eurasia as far north as England and Finland and as far east as western China, as well as in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
  • Widespread population decline, e.g. in Europe more than 80 % since 1980.

The European Turtle Dove nests in bushes or trees in mosaic-type landscapes. For foraging, it needs open farmland adjacent to groups/lines of trees/shrubs and a nearby water source.

Feeding habitat

  • Almost exclusively granivorous, eating mainly seeds of arable weeds, but increasingly also seeds of agricultural crops such as cereals and oilseed rape.

Nesting site

  • Nest in a forked branch of a tree or tall bush.
  • Suitable breeding habitat includes open woodland, field copses, high hedges in open landscapes, usually arable land or dry grassland.

Winter habitat

  • European populations overwinter in the Sahel region of Africa from Senegal to Eritrea.
  • Winters in savannahs and coastal scrubland.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

Population in Switzerland

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

The loss of semi-natural agricultural landscapes due to intensive agriculture is reducing the breeding and foraging habitats of the European Turtle Dove, and its breeding success is declining. It is also threatened by hunting and illegal shooting during migration.

 
Breeding season
  • The main problem is the lack of accessible food near breeding sites. As a granivore, the European Turtle Dove requires large quantities of seeds during the breeding season, and these must be available close to the ground in open areas.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • Hunting pressure on the European Turtle Dove is high. Many populations pass through several European countries where hunting is common and which have long hunting seasons.
  • Reliable figures on mortality due to illegal shooting are not usually available.

Monitoring
  • Step up Switzerland-wide monitoring of populations.
  • Use of audio lures significantly improves the identification of territories: up to three times as many European Turtle Doves are detected per visit using these. In Switzerland, too, this method is useful for improving the recording of territories – particularly where there is little singing activity by individual birds.
 
Conservation
  • Conserve habitats with seed-rich arable weeds accessible on the ground.
  • Maintain open areas of ground for foraging.
  • Conservation of open woodland, e.g. through forest grazing (bison projects).
  • Create or maintain wetland landscape elements such as shallow-banked ponds.
 
Research
  • For measures to be targeted and effective, knowledge of their impact on habitat use, feeding behaviour and breeding success is required.
  • Are Swiss populations self-sustaining? How much interaction is there between them?

  • Downward population trends internationally and in Switzerland.

  • Successful examples from England, the Netherlands and Germany show the effect of targeted measures.
  • The temporary hunting ban in force in France, Spain and Portugal since 2021 is proving successful with significant recovery of populations in various countries. Continuation of the hunting moratorium is necessary.
