Western House Martin

The Western House Martin is widespread and occurs mainly in open and semi-open terrain. It builds its nests primarily on buildings with sufficient space under the roof, but less commonly also nests on rock faces or in quarries. For its food it preys exclusively on small to medium-sized flying insects.

The population of the Western House Martin has been declining throughout Switzerland since the 1990s, and in 2010 the species was classified as Near Threatened for the first time.

Nests on buildings are heavily dependent on human influences. The nests, which are reused year after year, are often lost during construction projects or are no longer tolerated. The loss of insect biomass and nest-building material is also having an adverse impact. Western House Martins can be helped by showing them consideration, raising awareness and providing artificial nests.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Widespread from lowland areas to the mountains, with the highest densities at low elevations.
  • Abundance decreases sharply from 1000 m asl, but breeding takes place up to 2400 m asl and higher.
Development in Switzerland
  • Sharp decline in populations, but also in the number of colonies, since at least the 1980s.
  • Over the last ten years, the population has remained fairly stable.
  • Major differences between individual colonies and regions, but greatest losses in the Central Plateau and in the foothills of the Alps.
International
  • The Western House Martin is distributed throughout Eurasia.
  • In some European countries (e.g. Germany, United Kingdom), populations are also in decline.

Today, the Western House Martin nests almost exclusively in buildings near which it can find sufficient flying insects and muddy material for nest building. It builds the nests, which it uses year after year, in the protected space between the roof and the facade.

Feeding habitat

  • Likes to search for food over open terrain.
  • Catches insects such as flies, midges or aphids in flight.
  • Hunts wherever there are a lot of insects, e.g. over bodies of water or along hedges.

Nesting site

  • Prefers to breed in colonies.
  • Nest made of mud pellets, used year after year, on buildings with a rough facade and protection from weather (overhanging roof), less commonly on rock faces or in quarries.
  • Will readily use artificial nests.

Winter habitat

  • Long-distance migrant, wintering in West and Central Africa.
  • Also uses open areas at its wintering grounds.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

The disappearance of nest sites during construction projects, the lack of nesting material due to soil sealing and dry weather in spring, the decline in flying insects due to intensification of agriculture and modern construction methods are all risk factors for the Western House Martin.

  • Habitat improvement around colonies would be required (e.g. unsealing of soils, naturalistic gardens).

  • Western House Martins have a close association with man-made structures and are therefore heavily dependent on human tolerance. Raising awareness among residents and building owners is vital.
  • Artificial nests are a very effective measure when used optimally: close to an existing colony, installed properly, droppings boards fitted.
  • Effects of climate change on insect biomass and migration mortality should be borne in mind.
