Alpine Swift

The Alpine Swift was originally an inhabitant of rocky landscapes. In the Alps and locally in the Jura it nests in sheltered spots on rock faces. However, it has now also moved into urban areas, and today more than 80 % of pairs nest in buildings. This development has been accompanied by an increase in its population and an expansion of its range. Today, there are 1,800–2,300 pairs in Switzerland. Breeding sites are usually below 1500 m asl. However, building-nesting birds, such as the Alpine Swift, are potentially at risk from building demolitions and renovations to improve energy efficiency. In the long term, the only way to preserve the population is by protecting and preserving existing breeding colonies and creating new nesting sites.

  • Alpine Swifts originally nested on rock faces, but today mainly inhabit buildings in cities and villages.
  • Breeding sites are usually below 1500 m asl, and in urban areas usually below 800 m asl.

International
  • Distribution from the Mediterranean and the Middle East northwards to southern Germany, also occurs as far east as the Indian subcontinent, as well as in eastern and southern Africa.

Today, the Alpine Swift inhabits buildings in built-up areas. In the Central Plateau, it nests on tall, free-standing buildings or bridges; in the Jura and the Alps, it also nests on rock faces. It feeds exclusively on the wing.

Feeding habitat

  • Insect-rich skies above open areas such as wetlands or parks.

Nesting site

  • Nests mainly in colonies, but also individually, e.g. in roller blind housings.
  • Nests are located in cavities in buildings.
  • Will also use nest boxes on the outside of buildings.
  • Nest location at min. 8 m above ground, with unobstructed approach.

Winter habitat

  • Long-distance migrants.
  • Overwinters in tropical Africa south of the Sahel.
  • Outside the breeding season stays permanently on the wing.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

Nesting sites in and on buildings are constantly under threat from construction projects. Broods in roller blind housings are also heavily reliant on human tolerance. As a colony breeder, the Alpine swift is sometimes susceptible to predation (e.g. by martens) or diseases.

 
Breeding season
  • Availability of suitable nesting sites in buildings limits distribution and number of pairs.
  • Bad weather and disease during the breeding season are detrimental to breeding success.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • Climatic anomalies during the winter or during bird migration can force Alpine Swifts to land.
  • Exposure in wintering grounds to pesticides banned in Europe.

  • Population trend is tracked as part of the Swiss Ornithological Institute’s monitoring projects (monitoring of common breeding birds).
  • Trend in the Alpine Swift population in a number of building-based colonies is monitored by the Swiss Ornithological Institute in collaboration with volunteer colony guardians.
  • Monitoring the situation of populations in natural habitats and protecting these breeding colonies would be beneficial

  • Apart from possible weather-related setbacks during the breeding season, there is nothing to prevent a further increase in the population of building-nesting birds.
