Western Capercaillie

The Western Capercaillie is the largest of the four grouse species native to Switzerland. It lives in structurally diverse mountain forests in the western Jura, along the northern foothills of the Alps and in the Central Alps in Grisons. The population size for 2013–2016 was estimated at 760–960 birds (380–480 cocks, plus about the same number of hens). It had been declining significantly for decades. The reasons for this were, on the one hand, the increase in standing timber in the mountain forests, and, on the other hand, increased human pressure. Countermeasures required include thinning of forests through forest management interventions and protection against disturbance, e.g. through the establishment of wildlife sanctuaries.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Common in the western Jura, along the northern foothills of the Alps from Bern canton to the St. Gallen canton and in the Central Alps in Grisons.
  • Population at the time of the current Breeding Bird Atlas (2013–2016) 380–480 cocks in spring, probably more now.
Development in Switzerland
  • Long-term stable to slightly upward trend in the foothills of the Alps and probably also in the Central Alps.
  • Long-term downward trend in the Jura and reduction of range to the highest elevations in the Vaud Jura.
International
  • Main distribution range boreal (Fennoscandia and Russia), secondary distribution in the Carpathians, Alps and Pyrenees.
  • Critically endangered in most of Europe’s low mountain ranges.

The Western Capercaillie inhabits structurally diverse, coniferous forests and conifer-dominated mixed forests. A well-developed dwarf shrub and herb layer is important for rearing young and provides shelter and food.

Feeding habitat

  • If there is no snow, Western Capercaillies forage near the ground. Once there is snow on the ground, they eat pine, silver fir and spruce needles.

Nesting site

  • Like all grouse, Western Capercaillies are ground-nesting birds.

Winter habitat

  • Winter habitat is basically the same as in summer, except that the birds spend more time in trees in winter.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Threats, activities and forecasts
Limiting factors and threats

The main limiting factors for the Western Capercaillie in Switzerland are lack of habitat (forests are too homogeneous or have too many deciduous trees) and disturbance (too many people in the mountain forests).

 
Breeding season
  • Cold wet weather in June and July increases chick mortality. Disturbance by humans can amplify this effect further.
  • Gaps in the forest are also important for ensuring a good food supply (insect larvae, spiders).
 
Migration/ Winter
  • In winter, the main risk for the Western Capercaillie is disturbance. If the birds are startled too often, they waste a lot of energy. This can have a negative impact on reproduction in the following spring.

  • The distribution of the Western Capercaillie is monitored in all cantons where this species occurs.
  • This data is essential as a basis for conservation of the species.
  • Some cantons go further and have programmes for estimating the population size.
 
Conservation
  • All cantons with Western Capercaillie populations are implementing measures to improve the forest structure, mostly within special forest reserves, but in some cases also without forest reserves.
  • Most cantons have set up wildlife sanctuaries for wildlife to prevent excessive disturbance in critical habitats.
 
Research
  • Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) is conducting a research project with two objectives: (a) to estimate the population size, (b) to determine what links exist between subpopulations which are sometimes located quite far apart from one another.
  • A reassessment of the causes of decline in areas with decreasing trends would be useful.

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • In the northern foothills of the Alps and in the Central Alps, the long-term prospects for the Western Capercaillie are good.
  • In the Jura, the Western Capercaillie’s best chance of survival is at the highest sites in the western Jura (Vaud canton). The species has already disappeared from the whole of the rest of the Jura, primarily due to unfavourable changes in the forests.

Prevent / minimize disturbances

The Western Capercaillie is sensitive to disturbance, particularly during the mating and breeding season (March to July). Wildlife sanctuaries are a suitable tool for protection against disturbance.
