Western Barn Owl

A synanthropic species, the Western Barn Owl inhabits structurally diverse agricultural land with a high density of small mammals. It hunts in open terrain, but prefers to hunt along hedges, fallow areas and field margins. Its breeding sites are usually located inside buildings, in crevices or in nest boxes.

In Switzerland, the Western Barn Owl breeds predominantly in lowlands below 700 m asl. The population fluctuates sharply from year to year.

Providing nesting aids in extensive agricultural areas is an efficient method for the conservation of the Western Barn Owl. Its food supply can be boosted by staggered mowing, establishing ecological compensation areas and building small structures.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • The species is distributed across the Central Plateau, Ajoie (JU) and the north-eastern Jura.
  • With a few exceptions, breeding sites lie below 700 m asl.
  • Highest densities in the western Lake Geneva region, the Broye plain and Ajoie.

  • Downward population trend from the 1950s with recovery since the 1980s.
  • Mean population has been roughly stable since the 1990s (200–1,000 pairs).
  • Sharp annual population fluctuations in the short term (supply of mice, harshness of winter).

The Western Barn Owl inhabits open agricultural landscapes, often near human settlements. It prefers to hunt along structural features. As a distinctly synanthropic species, it nests almost exclusively in buildings and will readily make use of nesting aids.

Feeding habitat

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

The main limiting factors for the Western Barn Owl are the disappearance of nesting sites, poorer availability and accessibility of small mammals due to intensive agriculture, periods of bad weather during the breeding season and snowy winters. Road traffic also claims many victims.

  • Loss of nesting sites due to building renovations or disappearance of field barns.
  • More intensive agricultural practices and development make its hunting areas less attractive.
  • Periods of bad weather during the nestling period increase the mortality of young birds.

  • Food availability and accessibility in winter have a significant impact on populations; in particular, longer-lasting snow cover leads to a sharp reduction in numbers.
