Little Ringed Plover

The Little Ringed Plover was originally an inhabitant of gravel banks in floodplains and estuaries. It needs vegetation-free areas of gravel and sand and regularly colonises new sites as the quality of old ones deteriorates, so it is dependent on natural river dynamics. As an adaptable pioneer species, it also successfully colonises new habitats when natural ones become scarce: these days it also nests in gravel pits, on construction sites and even on flat roofs.

In Switzerland, the Little Ringed Plover is considered to be endangered, with 90–120 breeding pairs and an uneven distribution.

The species is exposed to many threats in natural and newly colonised habitats, but can be conserved by revitalising rivers and protecting breeding sites from disturbance.

The graph shows the relative evolution of the breeding population in Switzerland (100 = mean value). Example: A value of 130 means that the population in the corresponding year was 30% above the mean value of the entire period considered.
Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • 60 % of the population nests along rivers, 30 % in gravel pits and the remainder in a variety of habitats (e.g. construction sites, army ranges, wet arable land). The latter are often transient.
  • The largest subpopulation (approx. 30 pairs) is located on the Alpine Rhine in St. Gallen canton.
Development in Switzerland
  • Habitat loss led to a historic low of 20 pairs in the 1960s.
  • From the mid-1960s, gravel pits and other alternative habitats were colonised, which was instrumental in helping the population recover.
  • It has now been stable at around 100 pairs since the 1990s.
International
  • As in Switzerland: declines in early 20th century, followed by an increase thanks to colonisation of new habitats.
  • Large differences between countries/regions: proportion of breeding sites in natural vs. artificial habitats varies greatly.
  • Population growth and regional increase thanks to large-scale improvement projects.

Habitat and food requirements

The Little Ringed Plover needs open, sparsely vegetated areas of sand, shingle or gravel. Habitats that meet these criteria are banks and gravel islands in rivers and estuaries, gravel pits and construction sites.

Feeding habitat

  • Forages in vegetation-free areas, on riverbanks or in the still waters of small ponds or pools.

Nesting site

  • Its nest is a simple hollow created on an open surface.

Winter habitat

  • During migration often stops near water, on gravel and sandy beaches, on mudflats or sometimes in flooded fields.
  • Overwinters mainly in tropical Africa, where it chooses similar habitats.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

In Switzerland, breeding habitats suitable for the Little Ringed Plover are rare, as natural river dynamics have been lost due to watercourse straightening and the construction of hydroelectric power plants. Although the species can also use alternative habitats, these too are scarce and often suitable only on a temporary basis.

  • Loss of natural watercourse dynamics.
  • In natural habitats: disturbance caused by visitors and sudden changes in water levels (flooding) lead to breeding losses.
  • In alternative habitats (e.g. gravel pits), site operations pose a risk.

  • Suitable resting or wintering areas are relatively limited, and here, too, human pressure leads to frequent disturbance.

  • Continue population monitoring, especially in areas with revitalisation projects.
  • Enhanced monitoring at alternative sites: it is particularly important to identify nesting sites as early as possible, especially in gravel pits and on construction sites, so that protection measures can be taken.

  • Develop large-scale river revitalisation projects, including visitor management.
  • Safeguard natural hydrological and sedimentary dynamics in rivers to create pioneer habitats.
  • In alternative habitats: improve communication with stakeholders (especially gravel pit operators) so that breeding sites are protected.

  • Study the importance of reproductive success, survival and inward and outward migration in population trends at natural breeding sites and in alternative habitats.
  • Determine the impact of disturbance and human activity on the species in the various habitats.

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • Experience from several improvement projects shows that the species responds very well to the revitalisation measures taken to support it and that the number of pairs breeding in natural habitats is increasing.
  • The species can survive only if sufficient habitats are available. Further efforts are therefore needed to ensure the availability of sufficient natural breeding sites, as well as alternative habitats.

Little Ringed Plover

If pebbles suddenly appear to move on gravel or sandbanks, it may be a Little Ringed Plover. With its small fast steps it reminds one of a rolling ball, stopping suddenly then again running a small stretch. Sometimes it energetically tramples around on sand or mud to flush prey out of hiding places....
