Common Sandpiper

The Common Sandpiper lives along watercourses, on gravel and sandy areas with low vegetation where it can camouflage its nest. As a result of habitat loss due to the channelling of rivers and the construction of dams, almost the entire population, numbering fewer than 100 pairs, is concentrated in the floodplains of the Alps and their foothills.

The main threats to the species in its breeding grounds are disturbance caused by recreational activities and abrupt changes in discharge volumes from hydropower plants due to hydropeaking. Multiple floodplain revitalisation projects have shown that the species responds very well to measures, provided the problem of disturbance is taken into account and visitor guidance measures are implemented.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Occurs only in the floodplains of the Alps and their foothills.
  • The canton of Grisons is home to more than 50% of the Swiss population.
  • During migration, the species makes stopovers on the banks of lakes and rivers; a few individuals spend the winter in Switzerland, mainly on Lake Geneva.
Development in Switzerland
  • Still common in the Central Plateau at the beginning of the 20th century, since when there has been a decline in both distribution and population size.
  • Slight recovery since 2009 thanks to revitalisation projects.
  • In the mid-1970s approx. 100-–130 pairs, today approx. 70–90 pairs. 60% reduction in its range over the same period.
International
  • Trend in Europe is similar to that in Switzerland, with the decline sharper at lower elevations than in the Alps and their foothills.
  • Today, a maximum of 5,000–8,000 pairs breed in Central Europe, mainly in the Alps, Sudetes and Carpathians as well as parts of the Rhine Valley.

The Common Sandpiper needs extensive floodplain areas with fairly slow-flowing sections of river where there are sand and gravel banks with pioneer vegetation.

Feeding habitat

  • The species forages on bodies of water, on river banks or in the still waters of small ponds or pools.

Nesting site

  • Pioneer vegetation is crucial for nesting sites and as a hiding place for chicks.
  • The nest is camouflaged in the low vegetation, usually a short distance from the water.

Winter habitat

  • During migration and in winter, the Common Sandpiper uses a variety of habitats, mainly lake shores, but also smaller bodies of water or rivers.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

The greatest threat is the lack of suitable habitat. The straightening and channelling of rivers has led to the disappearance of many floodplain areas. Moreover, hydropower plants have led to rivers losing their natural hydrological and sedimentary dynamics and becoming unsuitable for breeding.

 
Breeding season
  • Human disturbance is the greatest risk during the breeding season, as floodplains are popular recreation areas. Disturbance often leads to nests being abandoned or even destroyed.
  • Sudden changes in water flow are a hazard, as flooding can wash away broods.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • Suitable resting or wintering areas are relatively limited, and here, too, human pressure leads to frequent disturbance.

Common Sandpiper

The Common Sandpiper often stops while searching for food and bobs its rear body. Its flight action is highly distinctive with bursts of fast, shallow beats interspersed by short fleeting glides, at the same time making clear, high-pitched calls. The last 100 breeding pairs in Switzerland breed in semi-natural river floodplains in the Alps....
