Eurasian Skylark

The Eurasian Skylark inhabits open agricultural landscapes and avoids tall structures such as trees and urban areas. Its trilling song can often be heard in song flights lasting minutes. It nests on the ground and needs patchy, low vegetation, e.g. in arable land or extensive grassland, for foraging. Since the 1970s, its population has been declining throughout Europe – including Switzerland – due to intensive farming. Today, the Red List classifies it as Vulnerable (VU). Conservation of the Eurasian Skylark requires biodiversity areas in open sites such as wildflower strips or rotational fallow areas, conservation headlands, margins on arable land and extensively managed meadows, as well as measures targeted at production areas, such as broadcasting cereal seed.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • The Eurasian Skylark reaches its highest densities in dry grain-growing areas in the western Central Plateau, Ajoie (JU) and Klettgau (SH) between 400 and 800 m asl.
  • Also inhabits subalpine and alpine regions (high plateaus at around 2000 m asl).
Development in Switzerland
  • Populations have been declining sharply since the 1970s.
  • Many formerly inhabited areas are now abandoned. Population density has also decreased almost everywhere.
  • At higher elevations, populations are also declining in many places.
International
  • Population trend in much of Europe is downward (over 50 % since 1980).
  • The main reason for the downward trend is the intensification of land use due in part to agriculture but also increasingly to the spread of human settlement.

Eurasian Skylarks require expansive open agricultural landscapes with patchy low vegetation. They keep well away from tall structures (forests, urban areas, etc.).

Feeding habitat

  • Patchy low vegetation in various arable crops or meadows/pastures.
  • Along field margins, boundary structures and wildflower strips; on unsealed field paths (with gravel or marl).

Nesting site

  • In various arable crops (for first brood often winter wheat; later in various spring-sown crops, summer cereals, root crops, etc.).
  • Late-cut, rather patchy, extensively managed meadows.

Winter habitat

  • Open agricultural land (stubble fields, fallow areas).
  • Mild lowlands, especially in western and southern Europe.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Threats, activities and forecasts
Limiting factors and threats

Eurasian Skylarks are ground-nesting birds and have several broods to compensate for high breeding losses. However, excessively frequent farming operations are preventing successful breeding, fertilisers and insecticides are having an adverse impact on breeding habitat and food supply, and the spread of human settlement is increasingly leading to habitat disappearance.

 
Breeding season
  • Breeding habitat adversely affected by densely-planted crops, lack of vegetation (e.g. in maize) and fields that are too large.
  • Mowing too early and too frequently (intervals of at least 7 weeks required).
  • High risk of predation on field margins or narrow strips.
  • Low insect numbers due to insecticides.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • Eurasian Skylarks are also overwintering more often in Switzerland (especially in the Geneva region) due to milder winters.
  • The decline in cereal stubble fallow is likely to result in a limited supply of grain for them to eat.
  • Migrating Eurasian Skylarks are still sometimes hunted in southern Europe.

  • Long-term monitoring to review success in project areas (e.g. Klettgau SH, Schamserberg GR).
  • Separate surveys are required in hotspots with high population densities.
  • There are occurrence and potential occurrence maps for the Central Plateau and for meadow-nesting species at higher elevations.

  • A mix of different measures is required.
  • Sufficient ecological compensation areas in suitable open locations (wildflower strips and rotational fallow areas, conservation headlands, margins on arable land and extensively managed meadows).
  • Measures for production areas such as smaller plots, extensive cultivation (reduction of pesticides), broadcast sowing, patches, undersowing.

  • Develop skylark-friendly cultivation systems on a regional basis.

  • In the absence of targeted protection measures, populations will continue to shrink.
  • Farming is often too intensive in habitat suitable for Eurasian Skylarks (“favourable agricultural conditions”).
  • Keeping the landscape open is a challenge in some areas. Awareness-raising and involvement of regional planners are necessary.
  • Development of regional conservation projects is necessary, especially for existing populations.
