Common Whitethroat

The Common Whitethroat is a breeding bird typical of structurally diverse, extensively used open agricultural landscapes. It needs sunny low hedges, thorny scrub, herbaceous margins and fallow areas. Intensive agriculture has led to a sharp decline in such habitats and in insects as s source of food. The Common Whitethroat used to be common but its numbers fell rapidly in the 20th century. A slight recovery has been seen since 1993–1996, and its distribution seems to have expanded somewhat. The current Breeding Bird Atlas (2013–2016) estimated the population at 1,800–2,500 pairs – the species is deemed to be near threatened. To conserve the Common Whitethroat, diverse boundary structures, mature fallow areas, fewer pesticides and extensive hedge and margin management are needed.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Breeds mainly in the western Central Plateau and in the lower-lying areas of the Jura.
  • Regional recovery, especially in Champagne genevoise (GE), Grosses Moos (BE/FR), Ajoie (JU) and Klettgau (SH), thanks to targeted conservation measures.
Development in Switzerland
  • Sharp decline since the 1970s, with regional recovery from the 1990s onward.
  • Thanks to conservation projects, currently 1,800–2,500 pairs, very localised in the Central Plateau where land is managed extensively.
  • Classified as Near Threatened (NT) in the Red List.
International
  • Widespread in Europe and North Africa and as far as Central Asia.
  • European populations largely stable, regional declines in southern Europe.

The Common Whitethroat inhabits extensively used, open agricultural landscapes with herbaceous vegetation and scrub. Sunny habitats with thorn bushes, low hedges and adjacent herbaceous margins are important.

Feeding habitat

  • Ruderal zones, margins, fallow areas, path edges, banks and hedges in sunny locations.

Nesting site

  • Thorny hedges and bushes.
  • Old, structurally diverse fallow land.

Winter habitat

  • Overwinters south of the Sahara.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

The Common Whitethroat is primarily threatened by the loss of habitat in its breeding grounds. Structural impoverishment and intensive use of farmland are leading to a decline in suitable areas. Dry periods in wintering grounds are also having a negative impact.
