Bearded Vulture

The Bearded Vulture is one of the most iconic birds of the Alpine mountains. It nests in the heart of winter on a cliff, in an eyrie hidden from view, on a ledge well sheltered from the elements, which it may reuse several times. It occupies vast territories rich in avalanche corridors, gliding over them in search of carcasses, on which it is the last to feed, living mainly on bones. Eradicated from the Alps at the end of the 19th century, it was successfully reintroduced there from 1986: by 2025, there were 35 breeding pairs in Switzerland, representing a third of the Alpine population. To protect it, collisions, poisoning and disturbances at nests must be prevented.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • It nests primarily in Graubünden and Valais, with a few pairs in the Bernese Oberland, Ticino and the canton of St. Gallen.
  • It can be found throughout the Alps and increasingly often in the Prealps in all seasons.
Development in Switzerland
  • Eradication from Switzerland at the end of the 19th century.
  • Reintroduction of captive-bred individuals from 1986, with the first successful nestings in 2007.
  • Gradual increase in numbers, 35 pairs with at least one successful nesting attempt by 2025.
International
  • Disappeared from the Alps at the start of the 20th century, is now under pressure elsewhere in Europe.
  • Currently, increasing population in the Alps and Pyrenees, but in a critical condition in Corsica and disappearance from Eastern Europe.
  • Decreasing globally.

Feeding habitat

  • Mountain areas, particularly rugged terrain, ravines and avalanche corridors where carcasses are plentiful.

Nesting site

  • Extensive rock formations featuring ledges well protected from the elements.
  • Nesting sites are often used for several years.

Winter habitat

  • A sedentary species, the Bearded Vulture does not leave its Alpine strongholds for the winter.
  • During heavy snowfall, it may descend to the plains in search of food.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

Collisions with various man-made structures (e.g. power lines) and disturbances at the nest are the greatest dangers for the Bearded Vulture. It is also susceptible to poisoning (lead, poisoned bait, illegal feeding).

 
Breeding season
  • Highly sensitive to disturbances during the nesting period.
  • Helicopter flights near the nest, the presence of wildlife photographers, climbing or other outdoor sports are major sources of stress.
 
Migration/ Winter
  • The Bearded Vulture travels long distances in search of food, but is well adapted to winters in Europe and nests in this season.
  • Overhead cables, power lines, wind turbines and other man-made structures can cause fatal collisions.

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • The Alpine population is currently growing and is expected to double over the next ten years if the current trend continues.
  • Adult mortality is the most limiting factor.
  • Nine additional adult deaths per year would suffice to cause the population to decline, hence the importance of preventing avoidable accidents, i.e. those related to human activities.
