Conservation programme for birds in Switzerland - Priority species

Common Tern

The Common Tern breeds on pioneer areas by bodies of water that are protected from predators such as foxes. Its original breeding sites on gravel banks along the rivers in the Central Plateau have been lost due to the straightening of watercourses. To replace these, a network of nesting platforms and rafts has been created on many large lakes and some small ones, which the species has accepted well. Around 700 pairs in 20 colonies are currently breeding in Switzerland. They are concentrated in the Lake Geneva region, the Three Lakes region and the Zurich region. Maintaining this network of nesting aids is very important for keeping the species here as a breeding bird. Structural work is carried out on the platforms to reduce competition with the Yellow-legged Gull for nesting sites.

Distribution and prevalence in Switzerland
  • Colonies occur mainly on lakes with nesting aids (platforms, rafts, nesting islands, sometimes flat roofs) in the Central Plateau.
  • The species’ distribution is concentrated in the Lake Geneva region, the Three Lakes region and the Zurich region.
  • Occasionally nests on natural sandbanks and posts.
Development in Switzerland
  • The last natural gravel banks disappeared in the 1940s due to the straightening of watercourses; a network of replacement nesting aids was then created.
  • From 200 breeding pairs in 1976, the population has steadily grown, stabilising since 2015 at around 700 pairs in 20 colonies.
International
  • Breeds in temperate zones throughout the northern hemisphere and winters on coasts in the southern hemisphere.
  • In Europe, the population trend in recent years has been upward. The population has increased in many countries, has slightly decreased in Scotland and has been stable in Russia and Ukraine.

Breeds on lowland lakes and rivers (reservoirs) with nesting opportunities that offer protection from terrestrial enemies.

Feeding habitat

  • Lakes and rivers with good food sources.
  • In fresh water, eats mainly small surface fish, crustaceans and aquatic insect larvae, sometimes frogs, tadpoles and leeches.

Nesting site

  • Open areas, usually covered with gravel and some vegetation: nesting platforms and rafts, artificial islands, sometimes flat roofs, also sometimes posts, tree trunks and natural sandbanks.

Winter habitat

  • Long-distance migrant.
  • The European population winters mainly on the west coast of Africa.

The allocation to responsibility classes was based primarily on geographical distribution (Switzerland, Europe or worldwide) and the genetic and/or ecological significance of Swiss populations.

Operational level
The level at which measures should be taken for all national priority species is specified within the framework of specific 'species conservation' (SC), 'habitat conservation' (HC), or the biodiversity-friendly use of natural resources on the ""entire territory"" (ET) by all sectoral policies. Each species has been assigned to only one level. If measures at the 'entire territory' (ET) level are insufficient for the conservation and promotion of the species, measures at the second level, 'specific habitat conservation' (HC), are required. If this is also insufficient, specific 'species conservation' (SC) measures must also be applied. Therefore, a species requiring specific species conservation measures must also be given special consideration when implementing measures at the 'specific habitat conservation' and 'entire country area' levels.

An expert assessment was made of the urgency with which measures should be implemented, continued and/or newly planned for all species assigned to the specific 'species conservation' and 'habitat conservation' action levels. The two factors of endangerment and international responsibility were considered, as were the prospects of success.

The population estimate indicates how many pairs bred during the specified period. As this number fluctuates from year to year and due to uncertainties in population surveys, a range is given. For some species that are difficult to survey, only displaying males are listed. The population estimates cannot be simply doubled to derive the number of individuals. The number of birds is much higher after the breeding season, some birds take years to reach reproductive maturity, and in some cases the sex ratio is not 1:1.

Limiting factors and threats

The availability of nesting sites is a limiting factor. Since the straightening of rivers has resulted in the disappearance of natural breeding sites on gravel banks in rivers and deltas, the species now nests almost exclusively on artificial nesting aids.

  • An adequate network of maintained nesting platforms and rafts is important, to provide sufficient space for nesting and allow the birds to evade predation pressure.
  • Competition with the Yellow-legged Gull for nesting sites should be reduced by carrying out structural work.

Prospects for success and prognostics
  • Provided the network of nesting aids is maintained, the species may survive here.
  • Competition with Yellow-legged Gulls is reduced by work carried out on the nesting aids (e.g. covering them or taking them out of the water until shortly before the arrival of the Common Tern, adding further rafts/platforms if space is short).
  • Expanding the network of nesting aids gives the birds a better chance of evading predation pressure.
  • Return of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl causing some nesting sites to be abandoned.
